Assam in India has an inspired location on the banks of river Brahmaputra. This valley produces one of the worlds highest prized and finest wild silk, Muga silk or golden silk as it is popularly known. It is traditional industry dating back to ancient times. Naturally rich golden colour its botanical name is Antherea Assama caterpillar which feeds on leaves of som (Machilus Bombycine) and Soalu trees (Litsea Polyantha).A wild
caterpillar reared outdoors it produces the beautiful, exotic and strongest natural fiber known. Muga is exclusive only to Assam and not produced anywhere in the world.
Naturally rich hand woven golden colour it has the quality of appearing like spun gold. Texture is lustrous and sheen enhanced due to its natural glow. Durability up to fifty years and more is a known fact. As muga ages its golden lustre increases. Garments made of muga outlasts other fibers. An Eco-friendly hand woven textile due to non-usage of chemicals Hence its golden sheen and soft texture is retained. Tensile strength is the highest among all fibers. The strongest Natural fiber known. According to preference muga can attain a fine Texture by ironing or crushed crepe look after washing leaving it unironed Washing muga frequently does not harm it. Any Washing material can be used on muga In fact with very wash quality of muga gets finer and
softer. Embroidery of any kind of any thread can be done on muga. It has 30% moisture regain and absorbing capacity which is better than other silks. Its a stain free fabric. Experiments conducted on the ultra violet filtering properties of muga and Scientifically tested has proved muga filters 85.08% of harmful ultra violet rays in sunlight thus protecting the skin.
