Mastic Asphalt was developed over 25 years ago in Germany to resist the wear of studded tyres. After studded tyres were banned in 1975 the use of SMA was continued because experience has shown it to perform better than the conventional asphaltic concrete wearing course. Mastic Asphalt consists of a coarse aggregate skeleton bound with a mastic consisting of crushed rock fines, filler, and bitumen

Suitable for maintenance and rehabilitation.
It is an alternative to aditional surfacing.
It can be laid using conventional laying equipment without requiring the application of pre-coated chips.
Laying is less weather dependant than HRA and pre-coated chips.
MA possesses important functional, economic and technical advantages over conventional mixtures.
It offers increased resistance to rutting or permanent deformation.
It has a high skid resistance.
An even finish providing a smooth riding surface.
Offers improved visibility in wet weather by reducing spray levels.
Reduces noise levels.
Less traffic disruption during the laying process
