The embroidery was early seen in the unearthed legacies in the Yin and Shang and west Zhou dynasties. In the spring and autumn and warring states periods, the greatly improved skills of silk weaving have made it more beautiful and more expressive. In Chin and Han periods, the skill of embroidery was developed. In the end of Han and Six dynasties period, China was in the era of “increasing the number of Buddha”; therefore the Buddha embroidery has gradually prospered, which was the first for the human being embroidery. The embroidery in Tang and Song dynasties was developing towards the delicacy and exquisite. It was for combination of daily use and appreciation at the earlier time, and then developed to separate developments. Thanks to the active engagement of scholars, the art of calligraphy and painting has been more closed, which formed the new trend of the painters offering pictures, the craftsmen embroidery that more and more fineries have increased. In Ming and Qing dynasties, thousands of professional workshops for commercial productions in villages and cities alike have emerged, which is the heyday time of traditional embroidery. The most influenced artistic genres to the future are Gu embroidery of Shanghai, Jing embroidery of Beijing, Bian embroidery of Kaifeng, Lu embroidery of Shandong, etc. and named for “four famous embroideries ” by descendents that are Su embroidery, Yue embroidery, Xiang embroidery and Shu embroidery.
