ASURO is a tiny mobile robot developed for educational purposes by DLR, the german aerospace centre.
It is very flexible and completely programmable in C. Assembly is easy for experienced electronic technicians and feasible for a novice. ASURO is a freely C-programmable moving robot, developed at the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics in the German Aerospace Centre (DLR2). Electronic experts consider the assembly phase as an easy training course for beginners. Apart from the printed circuit board, the robot kit contains only standard parts that can easily be manipulated. Freeware software is used in the programming phase. Therefore, ASURO will prove to be an excellent tool for the hobbyist starting a new experience in processor-controlled systems, for high school classes and students, educational courses, or adult education centers, completely developed by using freeware in a non-commercial organization, ASURO also demonstrates success in designing a low-cost, working robot.

ASURO contains a RISC-Processor, two independently controllable motors, an optical sensor for line tracking, six collision sensors (switches), a speed sensor at each wheel, three optical indicators, and an infrared transmitter system for programming and remote control by a PC.

Except for the printed circuit boards (PCB) only standard parts are utilized and freeware tools can be used for programming. Therefore ASURO is exceptionally suitable as an introduction into processor-controlled hobby electronics, for projects in schools and universities, for studies and adult education centres. Special tools, which are freeware for private users, have been used for all electronic development phases and software design, proving that robots can be designed without expensive tools or machines. ASURO is equipped with an Atmel AVR RISC-processor and two independently controlled motors, an optical linetracer, six collision-detector switches, two odometer-sensors, three indicator LEDs.
